1966 Mustang
Many people are unaware that the 66 Mustang was actually the followup to the debut of the Mustang line. This is because the Mustang was originally rolled out in mid ’64 and had a continuous production for roughly a year and half. Which makes the 1966 Mustang, technically the second release of the model line.
It had much to live up as its predecessors broke sales records that Ford had never seen before. However, this model was definitely up to the task.
In March of 1966, amazingly, the millionth Mustang was manufactured. This staggering number still boggles my mind today, but imagine what it meant to Ford almost 40 years ago. The Mustang basically helped define Ford as one of the leaders in the muscle car era.
By 1966, Mustang was a well known brand that symbolized power and speed, and was extremely desired by consumers. Ford was trying to target both the younger generation and the older one as well – stating in their advertisements that owning a Mustang was basically like finding the fountain of youth. It was cheesy, but apparently worked as sales continued to boom.
Total production of the Mustang line in 66 topped out at 607,658 units. The prices ranged from $2,416 for a standard model, to $2,652 for the convertible models.
