With the 71 Mustang, Ford had been knocked from their perch and their iconic model was starting to lose some of its steam. It also didn’t help that outside sources such as higher insurance rates on faster cars and gas prices were on the rise.

Their answer was the new 1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351. But this model seemed to have some problems in allowing Ford to once again dominate the competition. This car was practically built in order to have a Trans AM counterpart. But this was not such a good idea as Ford was not so much involved in the racing circuit.

But even though there were so many good things to say about this car and it really had a number of details that many other cars lacked, the new model was really a big car. So the engine despite its power and qualifications would not stack up to provide a high quality performance, because the car was just too big! The wheelbase for this model was increased by 1 inch and in overall length, the car added an extra 2.1 inches and another 2.8 inches in width. To make things even worse, it had also gained an extra 100 pounds. When it came to how the styling of this car was shaped, well, it basically was just imitating that of the Shelby models. As a result of these changes, the Mustang Boss and the Mach 1 were the only cars in Ford’s collection that were similar in style.

When it came to the engine the Mach 1 was endowed with, this little beast had under its hood a massive 429 CID Super Cobra Jet Ram Air, having a total compression ratio of 11.3:1, a whooping 375 BHP and 450 pounds/feet of torque.
