The 1968 Mustang was just an astonishing car and when it first hit the market it left the other competitors again feeling quite envious. This car had everything that an American muscle car enthusiast wanted to find and it helped Ford continue to build their legacy. It had a sweet and streamlined look that continued to make it look mean and sporty, while still appealing to a wide demographic.

The 1968 Ford Mustang was one of the quickest pure production cars of the muscle car era.

So it was that on April 1st (no joke) the Ford Mustang 1968 Cobra Jet was brought into production. Even though its architecture was based on the 428 CID big car engine, it also featured the 427’s intake manifold and also some larger valve heads. Now people got what they had been asking for, the functional hood scoop, and it also featured the Ram Air induction.

When looking at the engine for the 1968 Ford Mustang, it was just an amazing piece of engineering. It had an extraordinary 410 HP but Ford decided that it was time to take action on this number and so they did not rate it to its real value and stated that the engine was just 335 BHP, because the insurance agencies would charge their customers more money if they owned a more powerful car.

If you wanted to have the 428 CJ, you could of had it by either buying a Mustang Coupe or a Mustang Fastback which featured a 4 speed manual or if you did not like the manual, you could go with the 3 speed automatic. Other features that were characteristic to all of the 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobras were the Polyglas F70X14 tires and the beefed up front shock towers. If you had chosen the 4 speed manual, you also would get along with the rear shocks. The standard ratios that were available were the 3.50:1 gears stacking 3.91:1 and 4.30:1 compression levels.

One more characterizing feature that all of the 1968 Ford Mustangs came with were the GT touches, like the C side stripe and the front fog lamps, but the only hint to what you could find on the inside was the hood stripe and the black scoop. If interested in this package you had to pay $500 for it and in it there were also front disc brakes included. Other available extras you could add to your Mustang were the Competition Handling Package stacked at $62 and the Equa-Loc differential, costing $79 more.
