60 Corvette
The 60 Corvette really did not undergo very many changes for this year. The biggest change was the addition of six new colors. A big achievement for Chevrolet in 1960 was that they produced over 10,000 units. This was a big milestone for Chevrolet, and it really helped prove to the manufacture that the Corvette model was becoming a big cash cow for them.
When it came to engine power, it could kick out 315 BHP at 620 RPM. There was a second version also which featured hydraulic lifters which provided better maintenance and it was clocked at 275 BHP and ran at 5200 RPM. Because of these improvements, the automatic transmission (powerglide) was no longer made available when the fuel injected engines popped onto the scene. This is because they could not handle the torque. When it came to carbureted engines, they pretty much did not undergo any changes. The lowest performing one was clocked at 230 BHP and it featured a single 4 barrel carburetor which was seconded by a dual 245 BHP hydraulic version and the last of the engines, was the 270 BHP engine which featured a twin 4 barrel carburetors.
When it came to the mechanical improvements of the 60 Corvette, this included clutch housings which were made of aluminum when it came to the manual transmissions. This made the car lighter by about 18 pounds and it also featured aluminum radiators which were present on the models running the Duntov cam. A new option for this model was the controlled cooling fan which was energy efficient and it was thermostatically controlled, and not only that but there was also a new 24 gallon fuel tank made available.
Other standards that were accomplished with this model are the rear end bar and the larger antiroll front bar. This facilitated a greater driving experience and also smoother handling.
The engine was tagged at $484 and it was a 315 BHP engine and if that wasn’t enough for you, you could also order Positraction for as low as $43. If you were interested in getting some new tires, you could choose from the black wall nylon tires which were only $15.
All in all the 1960 Corvette helped to show Chevrolet that they were really on their way.
