How much is my classic car worth?

Determining the value of a classic car is very subjective. What you think a car is worth another may not agree. Although there is a lot of different opinions on how to do this, there are several areas that you have to consider when attempting to determine the value of a classic car.

Here are five details to help you determine a classic car value:

1. Make and model. It goes without saying that some classic cars are simply worth more than others. For instance, a 1970 Chevelle will probably have a higher value than a Toyota that is only 20 years old.

2. Year. How old is the car? This is one question that you have to answer at the start of the evaluation process. As a general rule of thumb, the older the car the higher its value. Of course, this does not always hold true because there are many other factors that contribute to a car’s overall value and worth.

3. Desirability. How desirable is the car? In other words, are there many of them on the road? Or is it difficult to find one in good condition? Cars that were made in limited number and with only a few in existence are worth much more than those that were manufactured in large quantities.

4. Condition. Just like any type of car, classic or not, the condition is very important when determining its value. A car in mint condition will be worth much more than one that is beaten up and does not even start. When judging the condition of a classic car consider the following points: body, undercarriage, top, paint, trim, glass, dashboard, upholstery, floor coverings, engine compartment, engine operation, brakes and steering, transmission, and mileage.

5. Market value of other similar cars. If a particular make and model continues to sell at once price, year after year, and you have a car in similar condition, you should expect pretty much the same. Simply put, the market determines the value of classic cars in many cases.

There is no easy way of determining the exact value of any classic car. If you are going to attempt to put a value on your vehicle or one you are thinking about buying, consider the details listed above. In closing, they include: make and model, year, desirability, condition, and market value.

At one time or another, every car enthusiast usually will usually wonder, what age is a classic car? Since it is often times difficult to determine which cars are actually classics and which ones are just old. This leads to the question of how old a car must be to become a classic.

The answer to this question depends on one thing: your definition of a classic car. Yes, it is true. There are many definitions of what a classic car is and how old it must be to qualify. For instance, the Classic Car Club of America defines a classic as a car that was built between the years of 1925 and 1948. While some people agree with this definition, there are others who are totally against it and feel that cars produced in later years can also be considered a classic. Even with the time range detailed above, the club admits that not every car manufactured during this time is a classic.

When referring to cars, some people use the terms classic and antique in the same way. If you are one who believes that these two words are interchangeable, you will want to use the definition as outlined by the Antique Automobile Club of America. They consider cars that are 25 years or older an antique or classic.

Believe it or not, there are also legal definitions of what is a classic car. Of course, there is not just one definition to live by. Instead, they differ from one state to the next. Take California for example. They have a designation for vehicles of historic value based on the type of engine (at least 16 cylinders) if built before 1965, a car built before 1922, or one that is 25 years old with great historic interest. As you can see, the state of California has its own definition which leaves some interpretation. The same holds true with many other states.

For many, a classic is anything that is 20 years or older. This is a standard definition that is believed among the many who know that there is no way of saying for sure what is and is not a classic.

For classic cars sales, the make and model of a particular car is usually more important to a buyer, than is the age. If nothing else, it is widely accepted that a car has to be at least 20 to 25 years old to even be considered for the classic car designation.

Do you believe that you have a classic car on your hands? Have you been treating your vehicle right for many years and now believe that it should classify as a classic? If so, you are like millions of people across the world. For many, classic cars are a way of life. This is something they enjoy, and it is their dream to have one of their own. But before we go any further, remember this: just because a car is old and in good shape does not mean it can be considered a classic.

Before we get started it is important to know that classic car prices are determined by many variables, other than just age.

When a car is built it is not meant to become a classic. Do you think Ford and Chevrolet were trying to build old classic cars in the 1930’s and 40’s? Of course not. Instead, they simply wanted to produce vehicles that consumers would want to buy. That being said, circumstances changed over the years and many cars that were built during this time period are now considered classics.

It can be difficult to determine what makes a car a classic because there are so many definitions. For instance, some people put particular age limits on classics. There is a large group who feels that the only true classics are those that were built between the years of 1925 and 1948. Others define a car as being classic in general terms such as one that retains its appeal long after it has been produced for the last time. In today’s day and age, a common definition of a classic is anything that is more than 20 years old. Although this may make a car an antique, calling anything older than 20 years a classic does not make a lot of sense.

A classic car must have good looks, handle well, and above all else, be desirable. A 20 year old Ford is not going to be desirable to most people. That being said, one that was produced in the 40’s is going to have much more appeal to the masses.

In closing, what makes a car a classic in your eyes may not be the same to another person. Age does matter, and for some people this is good enough. For others, a classic is something more. What is your definition of a classic? Better yet, do you own one?
